Although India did not advance to the elimination rounds of the 2021 T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has chosen Rohit Sharma’s team as one of his two favourites to win the tournament’s championship match in Australia.

In the T20 World Cup 2022, Ricky Ponting endorsed both India and the defending champions Australia to get to the final, as well as the hosts to defeat the Asian titans in the championship game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Australia is in Super 12 Group 1 with New Zealand, England, and Afghanistan while India is paired with Pakistan, Bangladesh, and South Africa. On October 23, India will face off against Pakistan at the MCG.

Under Virat Kohli’s leadership, India put on a lacklustre performance at the T20 World Cup in the UAE, losing to Pakistan and New Zealand in their Super 12 games before exiting the competition.

With series victories against New Zealand, the West Indies, Sri Lanka, Ireland, and England, India has a new captain and is playing an aggressive style of cricket under Rohit Sharma. Since the World Cup last year, India has not yet lost a series.

“I think India and Australia will be the two playing in the final and I will just have to say that Australia will beat them in the final,” Ponting told the ICC.

“The fact that a lot of people, me included, thought when they went to UAE, the conditions that they were going to have to face on the back of the IPL, I thought the conditions might have been the thing that might not have allowed them to win it. But they found a way,” he added.
