Fast-bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar dismissed England Jos Buttler for a golden duck to give India a solid start in the first T20I at Southampton.

Jos Buttler’s tenure as England’s official white-ball captain began on a disappointing note as he was castled for a first-ball duck by India pace spearhead Bhuvneshwar Kumar during the first T20I on Thursday.

Buttler entered the game on the back of some stunning displays in this year’s IPL and the ODI series in the Netherlands. The right-handed batsman finished IPL 2022 as the highest run-scorer, smashing a staggering 863 runs with the help of four centuries and as many fifties.

He followed it up with yet another sensational knock against the Netherlands. In the first match of the three-match series, he scored 162 not out off just 70 balls. He did not get a chance to bat in the second game before hammering 86 off 64 balls in the third ODI.

Buttler’s red-hot form, however, counted for little when he was up against Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the series-opener on Thursday. England needed a solid start after conceding 198 runs earlier in the game but Buttler failed to deliver with the bat.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar cleans up Jos Buttler:

Bhuvneshwar Kumar did not give Jos Buttler any chance to settle down and trouble India. In the very first over, the right-arm pacer cleaned up the England skipper with a vicious inswinging delivery.

Before cleaning up Buttler, Bhuvneshwar had bowled four outgoing deliveries to Jason Roy. Buttler might have been expecting the same but Bhuvneshwar surprised him with the sharp inswinger. The ball brushed his pads before crashing into the stumps.

Meanwhile, India went on to win the game by 50 runs to take the lead in the three-match series. Batting first, the Men in Blue posted a big total of 198 for 8 in the allotted 20 overs. Hardik Pandya was the star with the bat, scoring 51 off 33 balls.

In reply, England put up a disappointing show with the bat and were all out for 148 in 19.3 overs. Pandya was the star with the ball too, taking 4 for 33 to derail the hosts’ chase.
