The fifth India vs England Test ended in a crushing 7-wicket defeat for Team India at Edgbaston. England came up with a dominating performance with both bat and ball in the second innings to register the memorable win.

Chasing 378, England cross the finishing line in less than 77 overs to draw level in the series. Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow scored unbeaten tons while Alex Lees scored a quickfire fifty to setup the win for their team.

Earlier in the game, India scored 416 runs in their first innings before England scored 284. In the second innings, India were all out for 245.

With the game now done and dusted, here is a look at Team India player ratings for the fifth India vs England Test:

Shubman Gill – 4

With both Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul out of the contest, Shubman Gill had the chance to impress and cement his spot in the Test team. A good performance against England in the testing conditions would have impressed one and all.

However, Gill failed to deliver in both the innings. In the first innings, he was out for 17 while in the second innings he could only manage 4. Gill’s poor performance is one of the reasons why India failed to get a good start in both the innings.

Cheteshwar Pujara – 6

Cheteshwar Pujara was making a comeback into the Test team through the just-concluded match. The senior batsman was dropped from the team for the home series against Sri Lanka after a spate of poor scores. He returned to the team after some stunning outings in the County Championship.

Pujara, however, failed to get going in the first innings and was out for just 13. In the second innings, however, he managed to do well by scoring a fifty. The right-handed batsman scored 66 but threw his wicket away at a crucial juncture of the game.

Hanuma Vihari – 4

Hanuma Vihari was promoted to number three in both the innings and he failed to do well on both the occasions. The right-handed batsman managed to play almost 100 balls in the match but could not make the most of it. In the first innings, he was out after scoring 20 off 53 balls.

His fortunes did not change in the second innings either. The India star played 44 balls and scored 11 runs before being dismissed by Stuart Broad.

Virat Kohli – 4

Virat Kohli’s poor run in international cricket continued against England too. All eyes were on the former India skipper as he entered the game after scoring a fine fifty in the warm-up game. Kohli, however, once again failed to deliver with the bat.

In the first innings, he was bowled by a Matthew Potts delivery while he was in two minds. Before departing, he had scored 11 off 19 balls. In the second innings, he was looking in good touch before an almost unplayable delivery from Ben Stokes ended his knock for 20.

Rishabh Pant – 8.5

Rishabh Pant was the star of the show for Team India at Edgbaston. The wicketkeeper-batsman delivered with the bat in both the innings. In the first innings, he scored 146 and added 222 runs with Ravindra Jadeja to help India recover from 98 for 5 and score 416.

In the second innings too, he came out when the team was in trouble. India were reeling at 75 for 3 before he and Pujara steadied the ship. Pant scored 57 in the second essay before Jack Leach ended his knock.

Shreyas Iyer – 3:

Shreyas Iyer was one the worst performers for India in the Test as he failed to do well with the bat. In both the innings, England deployed the short ball tactics against him and he fell right into the trap.

The Mumbai star scored 15 in the first innings before edging a short delivery from James Anderson behind the stumps. In the second innings, he hit a short delivery from Potts straight to Anderson at mid-wicket after scoring 19.

Ravindra Jadeja – 8

Ravindra Jadeja proved his worth with the bat once again at Edgbaston by scoring a stunning century. He scored 104 runs to bail India out of trouble in the first innings. It was Jadeja’s first Test century outside India.

In the second innings, he scored 23 runs. With the ball, Jadeja failed to make a mark as he went wicketless in both the innings.

Shardul Thakur – 3

Shardul Thakur had a forgettable outing at Edgbaston. In the first innings, he was out for just 1. He also dropped the catch of Ben Stokes before dismissing the England skipper to make up for it. Stokes’ wicket was Thakur’s only wicket in the match.

In the second innings too, he failed to do well with the bat and was out for 4. With the ball, he gave away 65 runs in just 11 overs.

Mohammed Shami –  4

Mohammed Shami bowled well in the game but could not pick as many wickets as he would have liked. In the first innings, he picked up 2 wickets and went wicketless in the following innings.

Jasprit Bumrah – 7

Jasprit Bumrah had a memorable outing. Leading India for the first time, he made a mark with both bat and ball in addition to taking a stunning catch. In the first innings, he scored 29 runs off a single over from Stuart Broad as the latter ended up bowling the most expensive over in Test.

Bumrah backed it up by taking 3 wickets and a flying catch to send back Stokes. In the second innings, he picked up 2 wickets in quick succession.

Mohammed Siraj – 5

Mohammed Siraj was expensive in both the innings as his economy-rate was more than 5 in the first and more than 6 in the second. In the first innings, he picked up 4 wickets but gave away 66 runs in just 11.3 overs.

In the second innings, he could not pick any wicket while conceding 98 runs in just 15 overs.
