In a scary turn of events, Sri Lanka batsman Kusal Mendis has been hospitalised after complaining of chest pain during the ongoing second Test against Bangladesh in Dhaka.

The scary incident took place on day one of the Test at the Shere Bangla National Stadium. Mendis had to be taken off the field in the 23rd over of Bangladesh’ innings. It was also the last over of the first session.

Mendis was fielding at second slip while Kasun Rajitha was bowling to Mushfiqur Rahim when the Sri Lanka star was seen holding his chest. The medical staff soon came out on the field to attend him before Mendis left the field with them while holding his chest. He was grimacing in pain as he made his way out of the field.

At first, it looked like Kusal Mendis had suffered a niggle but it did not take everyone long to realise that it was not. Mendis did not walk out on the field even after lunch. And according to latest reports, he has been hospitalised in Dhaka and is under medical observation.

Bangladesh Cricket Board doctor Manzur Hossain Chowdhury provided an update on Mendis, saying that the Sri Lanka star had to be taken to the hospital for “proper diagnosis and better management” of his condition. Chowdhury also stated that Mendis was suffering from dehydration before the game and said that it could be a possible reason.

The doctor further said that he was also suspecting gastritis as another possible reason behind the discomfort. At the moment, there is no clarity over Mendis’ participation in the game.

Kusal Mendis’ impressive display in first Test:

Kusal Mendis was one of Sri Lanka’s best performers in the first Test against Bangladesh which ended in a draw. He had scored a solid fifty in the first innings before scoring a quick 48 in the second to help his team draw the game.

Talking about the ongoing game, Sri Lanka made a brilliant start with the ball. They had Bangladesh reeling at 24 for 5 before Mushfiqur and Liton Das steadied the ship. At the time of writing this report, Bangladesh were on 108 for 5 with Liton on 47 and Mushfiqur batting on 42.
