The inaugural season of South Africa’s flagship T20 tournament called SA20 is about to begin as Paarl Royal locks horns against MI Cape Town in Newlands, Cape Town. The SA20 league is highly anticipated to boost South Africa’s interest towards the sport. Cricket South Africa (CSA) has left no stone unturned to create hype around this tournament and hopefully, it will live up to the expectations.

As many as 33 matches will be held in the tournament amongst 6 franchisees. Matches will be held in a double round-robin format with each side playing twice against each other in the league stage. While the tournament opener will be staged on 10th January at Newlands Cape Town, the final of the top-tier league will be held on 11th February. Following the league stage, the top four performing sides will proceed to the semi-finals.

The core of the teams was built through individual negotiation by the teams. A team was entitled to rope in five core players through their own process of respective negotiations. Of five core players, one must be a South African uncapped player.

After all the teams set up their core, SA20 saw its first-ever auction on September 19. The bidding process made young Tristin Stubbs as the most expensive player after he was sold for R 9.2 million (INR 4.1 crore) by Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
