Windies captain unbeaten on 145 after England claim one wicket for the morning

By lunch, West Indies had added 63 runs to their overnight score to be 351 for 5, still some 156 runs behind, having lost just one wicket for the day.

Nightwatchman Alzarri Joseph put on 52 runs for the fifth wicket opposite Brathwaite, with Joseph facing 75 balls for his 19 runs before Ben Stokes prised him out with a shorter, wider delivery which was slashed towards gully, where Dan Lawrence took the sharpest of catches moving to his left.

Lawrence had earlier been on the receiving end of a Joseph six, powered over deep square leg, adding to his two fours, one of which came via a glorious cover drive off Lawrence.

Brathwaite added four boundaries for the day, flicking the first ball of the morning fine off Matt Fisher and later cutting him through backward point.

But the tempo remained sedate, in keeping with the rest of the home side’s innings as they managed to manoeuvre past the follow-on target and then continued to play it safe, Brathwaite having batted for more than 10 hours and faced 444 balls for his score. He was joined by Jason Holder, who was unbeaten on 12 at the break.

England meanwhile, bowled six maidens in a row thanks to Jack Leach, Chris Woakes and Stokes, and Leach sent down six consecutive maidens himself for scant reward, his solitary wicket coming from 60 overs and 107 runs.
