Toss Pakistan chose to bowl vs Afghanistan

An unchanged Pakistan won the toss and, unsurprisingly, opted to bowl first against Afghanistan in Sharjah in their Asia Cup game, the result of which will have ramifications for all the teams in the Super 4s.

If Pakistan beat Afghanistan, they will qualify for the final along with Sri Lanka, rendering the last two Super 4s games – India vs Afghanistan and Sri Lanka vs Pakistan – inconsequential. Afghanistan would be looking to bounce back from their defeat to Sri Lanka in the first match of the Super 4s. If they win, all four teams will stay alive.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam said he expected dew in the second half and cited that as the reason for his decision. Mohammad Nabi, who is playing his 100th T20I, said that he also wanted to bowl first.
Afghanistan made two changes: Azmatullah Omarzai, who was unwell for the previous game, came back in place of Samiullah Shinwari, and Fareed Ahmad replaced Naveen-ul-Haq, who, Nabi said, had been “rested”.

The match is being played on the same pitch where Pakistan had bundled out Hong Kong for 38. But, according to Wasim Akram, who was speaking on the official broadcast, the surface looked “much better” for batting this time around.

Afghanistan: 1 Hazratullah Zazai, 2 Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), 3 Ibrahim Zadran, 4 Najibullah Zadran, 5 Mohammad Nabi (capt), 6 Karim Janat, 7 Rashid Khan, 8 Azmatullah Omarzai, 9 Fareed Ahmad, 10 Mujeeb Ur Rahman, 11 Fazalhaq Farooqi

Pakistan: 1 Babar Azam (capt), 2 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 3 Fakhar Zaman, 4 Iftikhar Ahmed, 5 Khushdil Shah, 6 Asif Ali, 7 Shadab Khan, 8 Mohammad Nawaz, 9 Naseem Shah, 10 Haris Rauf, 11 Mohammad Hasnain
