Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan has become the second highest wicket-taker in T20I cricket thanks to his three-wicket haul against Bangladesh in the third match of the ongoing Asia Cup 2022 as he left behind New Zealand’s Tim Southee, who has 114 scalps to his name, behind.
Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi won the toss and chose to field first while going in with an unchanged side that had beaten Sri Lanka in the first match of the tournament. Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan became the first Bangladeshi to play 100 T20Is.
Bangladesh struggled for momentum as Mujeeb Ur Rahman (3/16) rocked the top order removing the top three of Mohammad Naim (6), Anamul Haque (5), and Shakib (11) quickly. Rashid Khan then joined in the fun and removed Mushfiqur Rahim for 1 run to reduce Bangladesh to 28/4.
He also got rid of Afif Hossain and Mahmudullah (25), however, Mossadek Hossain’s 48* helped Bangladesh put up 127/7 on the board.
Shakib Al Hasan Remains The Highest Wicket-Taker In T20Is
During his amazing spell of 3/22 against Bangladesh in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022 tournament in Sharjah, Rashid Khan went past Tim Southee of New Zealand to become the second highest-wicket-taker in T20I cricket. Southee had 114 wickets in 95 T20Is for New Zealand and now Rashid Khan has 115 wickets in just 68 T20Is for Afghanistan.
Rashid is now only behind Bangladesh captain Shakib, who had 121 T20I wickets before Tuesday’s encounter in Sharjah. Shakib took his tally to 122 in the powerplay as he removed dangerous Afghanistan opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz.
After making his debut in 2015 for Afghanistan, Rashid had become the fastest to 100 T20I wickets as he got to the landmark in just 53 T20Is. Rashid Khan also holds the record for the most wickets by a spinner in T20 cricket. He has 472 wickets and is only behind Dwayne Bravo, who leads the list with 604 wickets.
