MS Dhoni Rules Out Retirement, Confirms Participation In IPL 2023

MS Dhoni has ended all the speculations surrounding his future in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Since the start of this year’s competition, there were murmurs of IPL 2022 being Dhoni’s last. There were also solid reasons for those murmurs. Two days before the start of the competition, Dhoni had stepped down as Chennai Super Kings captain. The four-time winners then named allrounder Ravindra Jadeja as Dhoni’s successor.

Dhoni’s decision to relinquish captaincy made many believe that this could be his last season in the tournament. However, the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman has put an end to all the rumours and confirmed that he would be donning the yellow jersey next year too. Just like IPL 2020 where he had famously said ‘definitely not’ when being asked whether that was his last appearance for CSK, Dhoni has once again ended the retirement rumours on the last day of CSK’s campaign.

Dhoni confirmed the news at toss before CSK’s final IPL 2022 clash on Friday (May 20). CSK are taking on Rajasthan Royals in their final game of the season. The former India skipper stated that he would definitely play the next IPL in order to ensure that he bows out of the competition in front of CSK fans.

“Definitely, because it will be unfair to not to say thank you to Chennai. Won’t be nice to do that to CSK fans,” said MS Dhoni when asked whether he will play next year.

Dhoni has enjoyed a decent season in the ongoing tournament. While CSK has endured a terrible season, Dhoni has managed to do well. Midway through the season, he also took back the captaincy after Jadeja resigned as CSK captain. Talking about his performance this season, he has scored 206 runs in 13 games at a decent average of 34.33 and a strike-rate of over 128. As far as CSK are concerned, they are out of the playoffs race. At present, they are languishing at the ninth spot with 4 wins from 13 games. The Chennai-based outfit and Dhoni would be looking to exit IPL 2022 on a winning note.
