CSK vs RR Match Report: Sandeep Sharma held his nerve and defended 7 runs in the last 3 balls to help Rajasthan Royals beat Chennai Super Kings by 3 runs in IPL 2023. Defending 176, the Royals restricted the Super Kings to 172 for 6.

CSK vs RR: CSK innings:

Chasing 176 runs, Chennai Super Kings did not begin their innings in the best of manners. Their in-form opener Ruturaj Gaikwad failed to score big and was dismissed for just 8 by Sandeep Sharma. However, Devon Conway and Ajinkya Rahane did not let the Royals make further inroads after the early breakthrough.

The duo added 68 runs for the second wicket before Rahane’s dismissal triggered a collapse. CSK lost as many as 5 wickets in quick succession to find themselves reeling at 115 for 6 from 78 from 1 at one stage. Ashwin triggered the collapse by dismissing Rahane for 31 before taking Shivam Dube’s wicket for 8.

Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni then stopped the rot and soon revived the chase. In the 18th over, the duo collected 14 runs before collecting 19 in the 19th over. The equation was finally down to 21 runs from the final over.

Sandeep Sharma started with two wides before bowling a dot. Dhoni then hit him for two sixes to bring down the equation to 7 runs from the last 3 balls. And just when it looked like CSK would go on to win the match, Sharma bowled three stunning deliveries, conceding singles on all of them. CSK eventually finished on 172 for 6.

CSK vs RR: RR innings:

Earlier in the game, Rajasthan Royals scored 175 for 8 in the allotted 20 overs after being asked to bat first. In-form Jos Buttler once again starred with the bat for the Royals, scoring 52 off 36 balls. It was his third fifty in 4 games this season.

Tushar Deshpande gave CSK a good start by dismissing the dangerous Yashasvi Jaiswal for 10. Buttler and Devdutt Padikkal, however, quickly steadied the ship and put Royals on top. But before they could bat their team to a position of strength, Ravindra Jadeja dismissed Padikkal and skipper Sanju Samson in a space of 3 balls to put CSK in command.

Padikkal departed for 38 while Samson could not even open his account as Royals found themselves 3 down for 88. Samson was then replaced by Ravichandran Ashwin and he made the most of the promotion. The veteran player scored 30 off 22 balls and shared a 47-run stand with Buttler for the fourth wicket. Buttler’s knock ended in the 17th over when Moeen Ali bowled him.

Towards the end of the innings, Shimron Hetmyer once again displayed his finishing abilities. The southpaw scored an unbeaten 30 off 18 balls to help Royals cross the 170-run mark. For CSK, Akash Singh, Tushar Deshpande, and Ravindra Jadeja picked up 2 wickets apiece.
