The fifth India vs England Test ended on Tuesday (July 5) with a stunning win for the hosts at Edgbaston. England beat India by seven wickets to avoid a Test series defeat to India for the first time since 2007.
The hosts completed a record chase of 378 with utmost ease as the five-match series ended at 2-2. Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow hit unbeaten tons to help England chase down their highest total in the longest format of the game.
Needing another 119 from their overnight 259 for 3, Root and Bairstow did not face any difficulty and scored the required runs with incredible ease. Root remained unbeaten on 142 while first-innings centurion Bairstow remained unbeaten on 114.
The duo shared an unbeaten stand of 269 runs after joining hands in the middle when their team was in a spot of bother on day 4. After a great start to their chase, England had suffered a mini collapse to find themselves reeling at 109 for 3 from 107 for 0.
But before India could inflict further damage on the hosts, Root and Bairstow steadied the ship and eventually took their team home in style. Earlier in the game, India were all out for 245 in their second innings. Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant scored fifties for the visitors in the second innings.
Prior to that, India had taken command of the game after putting up a good show with both bat and ball in the first innings. Asked to bat first, the visitors recovered from 98 for 5 to post 416 thanks to centuries from Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja. In reply, England could only manage 284.
