India batting star KL Rahul is looking set to miss the upcoming edition of the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka as he looks to recover fully after undergoing a surgery.

KL Rahul, on Wednesday, gave an encouraging update on his injury. The India batting star took to social media to tell his fans and well-wishers that he underwent a surgery for a sports hernia, in Germany, and the process was “successful”.

The right-handed batsman was last seen in action during this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) where he led Lucknow Super Giants. Rahul once again made a mark with the bat and finished the competition with 616 runs in 15 innings at an average of 51.33 and a strike rate of 135.38. He was the second highest run-scorer in IPL 2022.

But after yet another productive season of the IPL, he suffered a big injury setback. Rahul was left out of the squad for the home T20I series against South Africa . The BCCI cited “a right groin injury” as the reason. He was also named in the squad for the upcoming Test against England.

Rahul was not only named in the Test squad but was also named as the vice-captain of the team. However, he will miss the Test too due to the groin injury.

KL Rahul set to miss Asia Cup 2022:

Done with the surgery in Germany, KL Rahul will now be taking part in a rehabilitation programme. He is likely to undergo his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. And while he will be desperate to recover as soon as possible, it looks highly likely that he would miss this year’s Asia Cup.

The 15th edition of the Asia Cup is scheduled to be played in Sri Lanka this year from August 27 to September 11. And it is highly unlikely that he would recover in time for the continental championship. According to ESPNcricinfo, the usual timeframe for an athlete to return to full activity after a sports hernia surgery, with proper therapy and rehabilitation is between 6 and 12 weeks.

6 to 12 weeks mean Rahul is unlikely to regain his full fitness before August end. In such a scenario, any chance of seeing Rahul return to action with the Asia Cup looks very slim. He is also set to miss the tour of West Indies that will take place right after the ongoing tour of England concludes.
