The number four was a popular number during the Junior Greco-Roman tournament that completed the 2022 Junior/16U Nationals, Friday afternoon, in Fargo, N.D.
That was the number of all-time Fargo Stop Signs earned by Idaho’s Mack Mauger after he dominated Brayten Casey of Wisconsin for the Junior Greco-Roman championship at 106 pounds. That 8-0 victory made the native of Blackfoot, Idaho, a Triple Crown winner this season at USA Wrestling national tournaments.
The same could be said of Boise heavyweight Aden Attao who also won by technical fall in the final match of the tournament to also win a Greco title and Triple Crown.
Both wrestlers won a folkstyle title in April and captured a freestyle championship earlier this week in the Fargodome.
And four was the number of individual titles won by the state of Illinois as champions Anthony Ruzic (113), Kannon Webster (132), Braden Stauffenberg (152) and Bradley Gillum (170) were among nine All-Americans who led the Land of Lincoln Junior Greco team to a 14th-straight team championship and 30th all-time in the 50 years of Junior Nationals Greco-Roman event.
Webster’s 8-1 victory over Alabama’s Cory Moody helped the Illinois wrestler avenge a loss to Moody in the Junior freestyle championship that took place on Tuesday.
This year’s annual Junior/16U Nationals set records for overall participation numbers and in five of the six tournaments that were held in the Fargodome, July 16-22.
The following is a breakdown of those numbers, including previous records:
- 16U Greco-Roman: 1,044 (1,011, 2002)
- Junior Greco-Roman: 1,140 (1044, 2021)
- 16U Women’s Freestyle 518 (360, 2019)
- 16U Men’s Freestyle: 1,436 (1317, 2021)
- Junior Women’s Freestyle: 946 (662, 2021)
- Junior Men’s Freestyle: 1,563 (record of 1585, 2021, remains)
- Total: 6,647 (5,901, 2021)
