Getting There: Gunther Reaches Milestone Untouched In 30+ Years

There’s one more to go. There have been all kinds of title reigns throughout WWE’s history, with different titles being held for varying lengths of time. It can mean a lot when someone holds a championship for a very long time, especially if it is a reign that goes on longer than almost anyone else’s. We are getting close to seeing that again, with a record that was set over thirty years ago.

Gunther won the Intercontinental Title on June 10, 2022 and has held the championship ever since. Once Gunther held the title through Friday, he reached 281 days as champion, surpassing Mr. Perfect’s 280 day reign in 1990-1991. As a result, Gunther has now held the title for the longest amount of time since the Honky Tonk Man, who held the title from June 2, 1987 until August 29, 1988, the all time record 454 days. Gunther also holds the sixth longest reign in the titles history and will move into fifth in less than a week. He is scheduled to defend the title against Sheamus and Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania 39.
