Empowering Women, Building Resilience: UAE Champions Gender Equality in Climate Solutions

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is emerging as a leader in promoting gender equality within the critical issue of climate action. Recognizing women’s unique vulnerabilities and strengths in the face of a changing environment, the UAE is implementing initiatives and advocating for global recognition of women’s role in building a sustainable future.
This commitment is evident in the UAE’s leadership of the upcoming Conference of the Parties (COP28), the annual UN climate change conference. The COP28 team boasts a strong gender balance, reflecting the UAE’s long-standing dedication to including women in all aspects of sustainable development. Sheikha Mariam Almheiri, the UAE’s Minister of Climate Change and Environment, has been a vocal advocate for this approach. At the 66th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, she emphasized, “We firmly believe that women can and do play a critical role in responding to the climate crisis.”
The UAE’s support extends beyond symbolic gestures. Initiatives like the Women in Sustainability, Environment, and Renewable Energy (WiSER) program by Masdar, a leading UAE clean energy company, provide concrete examples. WiSER focuses on fostering gender equality, particularly regarding climate change. The program empowers women through training, mentorship, and networking opportunities, equipping them to become leaders in the fight against climate change.
Financial assistance is another key element. The COP28 Presidency recently unveiled the Women Delegates Fund, a program that offers financial aid to support the participation of women from developing nations, particularly those most vulnerable to climate change. This initiative aims to strengthen women’s leadership and diplomatic skills in climate negotiations, ensuring their voices are heard at the decision-making table.
The UAE’s commitment to gender equality in climate action goes beyond its borders. The country actively advocates for this approach on the international stage. Noura Al Kaabi, the UAE Minister of State for Advanced Technology, highlighted this focus during the 68th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women. She emphasized the importance of integrating gender equality considerations within national systems to ensure women’s full and meaningful participation in climate solutions.
The UAE’s efforts are not without merit. The country has made significant progress on the Gender Inequality Index, ranking among the top 10 globally. This progress provides a strong foundation for the UAE’s leadership in promoting gender equality within climate action.
As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change, the UAE’s commitment to empowering women offers a promising path forward. By ensuring women are not just included but play a leading role in shaping climate solutions, the UAE is fostering a more resilient and sustainable future for all.
