Virat Kohli’s struggle with form is a topic of discussion in India and around the world, with experts and fans coming up with various reasons for the slump and solutions to help him come out of it. According to a former Indian skipper and chief selector, Virat Kohli can take a leaf out of Sachin Tendulkar’s display in the past and learn.
Former Indian captain Virat Kohli is going through a tough time these days. The star batter has been unable to play a big knock for quite some time now and had a forgetful outing against England in all formats recently. In six innings across formats against the English team, Virat Kohli only managed to score 76 runs.
He decided to take a rest to refresh himself and opted out of the upcoming white-ball series against the West Indies, which starts with a three-match ODI series on Friday (July 22) in Port of Spain.
Virat Kohli’s form has been a topic of discussion in the cricketing fraternity these days and many former greats have come up with various suggestions for the former Indian captain in order to help him get out of the lean patch. The 33-year-old, who has scored 70 international centuries during his 14-year-long international career up till now, last reached the three-figure mark against Bangladesh in November 2019.
Dilip Vengsarkar: Virat Kohli Should Take Sachin Tendulkar’s 2004 Example By Not Playing The Cover Drive
Amid all the chatter around Virat Kohli’s batting form in international cricket, former Indian captain and chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar has come up with some advice for Virat Kohli which could help him bounce back.
“If you take the example of Sachin Tendulkar in 2004, he was getting out in the same way in Australia. So, he cut off that scoring area completely and scored 241 in the last Test match of that series without playing the cover drive. Similarly, Virat also has the ability to do the same. He needs to work hard in that area and play effectively,” Dilip Vengsarkar said.
Notably, during India’s tour of Australia in 2003-04, Australians were getting the better of Sachin Tendulkar by bowling outside the off-stump line, so in the Sydney Test, the Master Blaster didn’t attempt to play a cover drive and scored an unbeaten 241 runs.
Dilip Vegsarkar: Virat Kohli Is Getting Out In The Same Fashion So He Should Be Alert And Work Hard
Speaking more about the pattern of Virat Kohli’s departures in recent times, Dilip Vengsarkar feels there is nothing wrong with Virat Kohli’s technique, but at the same time, he has to be more cautious about the idea that he will be targeted outside the off stump going forward.
“Look, he is a great player and he has scored all his runs all these years with the same technique. So I don’t think there is anything technically wrong. But yes, he is getting out in the same fashion, so he should stay more alert and work hard on that area because the bowlers are now going to bowl that off-stump line to him all the time. They are not going to bowl on his pads, they are not going to bowl the half volleys to him,” Vengsarkar added.
Virat Kohli scored only 11 and 20 in the 5th Test against England. His poor form continued in T20Is too as he failed to make a mark on his comeback. The batting superstar was out for just 1 off 3 balls in the 2nd T20I and scored 11 off 6 balls in the 3rd T20I before a minor groin strain ruled him out of the 1st ODI. He scored 16 in the 2nd ODI and 17 in the 3rd ODI.
It has also been reported that Virat Kohli has told the BCCI that he would be available for the Asia Cup, post which India is scheduled to take on Australia and South Africa in 3-match T20I series, which will be followed by the 2022 T20I World Cup Down Under. Virat Kohli may also feature in the 3 ODIs against and in Zimbabwe.
