Devastated Cricket World Pays Tribute To Australian Legend After His Tragic Death

In a tragic turn of events, former Australia allrounder Andrew Symonds passed away aged 46 following a car accident, throwing the cricket world into mourning. The fatal accident took place about 50 kilometers outside Townsville on Saturday (May 14) night. Symonds was living in Queensland after retiring from the game. According to a statement from Queensland police, ‘the car was being driven on Hervey Range Road, near Alice River Bridge when it left the roadway and rolled’.

Prior to Symonds’ tragic death, Australian cricket had lost two more legendary cricketers this year. Legendary duo Rod Marsh and Shane Warne also passed away this year after suffering suspected heart attacks. Part of Australia’s all-conquering team of 2000s, Symonds represented his country in 26 Tests, 198 one-day internationals and 14 T20Is. He was one of the most integral members of that team and was one of the best allrounders of his generation.

Aggressive batting, electric fielding and more than handy with the ball, Symonds was a captain’s delight. He was an important member of the Australian team that won the World Cup in 2003 and 2007. Symonds made a mark in his short Test career too. Symonds was born in Birmingham and had the chance to represent England but he decided to play for Australia. He made his debut in international cricket in 1998.

Symonds plied his trade in the Indian Premier League too. Deccan Chargers signed him up in 2008 for a whopping amount of USD 1.35 million. It did not take him long to make his mark in IPL as he smashed a blistering 53-ball 117* in just his third game. In 2009, he helped Deccan Chargers win the IPL title. The hard-hitting former allrounder also plied his trade for Mumbai Indians following his stint with Deccan Chargers.
