In the world of cricket, Pakistani skipper Babar Azam has carved a niche for himself as a record-breaking maestro, consistently leaving his mark regardless of the format he graces. This time, he has eclipsed none other than the “chase master” himself, Virat Kohli.
Babar Azam: The Record-Breaking Captain
At the tender age of 28, Azam achieved the distinction of becoming the fastest captain to amass 2000 runs in One Day Internationals (ODIs), accomplishing this feat in just 31 innings. In doing so, he shattered Kohli’s previous record, who had achieved this milestone in 36 innings.
Azam’s remarkable achievement unfolded on the field during the Pakistan vs. Bangladesh clash, marking the first Super Four match of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023. The Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore bore witness to this historic moment.
The illustrious list of captains reaching 2000 ODI runs includes South Africa’s AB de Villiers in 41 innings, Australia’s Michael Clarke in 47, India’s MS Dhoni, and England’s Eoin Morgan, both in 48 innings. Azam’s achievement underscores his prowess as a leader and a batsman, revolutionizing Pakistan’s cricketing fortunes since his debut against Zimbabwe in 2015.
Babar Azam’s pivotal role in Pakistan’s recent success cannot be overstated. Under his captaincy, the team ascended to the top rank in ODIs, transforming from a squad plagued by batting failures into a formidable match-winning outfit. His consistency with the bat has shattered numerous records, with many more waiting to be conquered.
Earlier in his career, Azam outpaced former South African batter Hashim Amla to become the fastest player to notch up 19 ODI centuries. He achieved this milestone in a mere 102 innings, trumping Amla’s 104. Not only did he break Amla’s record, but he also surpassed the South African’s run tally in the same number of innings, amassing 5353 runs compared to Amla’s 5165.
In the recent Super Four match, Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first against Pakistan. However, their innings were marred by the relentless Pakistani pace factory, resulting in a total of 193 runs on the scoreboard.
