England veteran pacer Stuart Broad does not understand the reasoning behind the decision of Steve Smith’s runout on Day 2 of The Oval Test and revealed that the umpire Kumar Dharmasena if the stumps had zing bails the decision would have come out in the favour of the home side on Friday.

Steve Smith survived a close run-out call in the defining moment of the game when the Australian batter survived a run-out call as he was batting in 42 of a throw by substitute George Ealham as he fell short of his crease when Bairstow dislodged the bails but the umpire felt that the English wicket-keeper removed the bails first with his keeping gloves before collecting the ball.

Speaking about the incident after the end of Day 2’s Play, Stuart Broad feels that the run-out decision of Steve Smith lies in the grey area, as it looked like out at the first angle and admitted that it looked like bail was dislodged before the ball was collected and revealed the explanation of the Umpires wasn’t quite satisfying.

“I honestly don’t know the rules. I think there was enough grey area to give that not out. It looked like the benefit of the doubt sort of stuff, first angle I saw I thought out, and then the side angle it looked like the bails probably dislodged.

“Kumar said to me if it was zing bails it would be given out, I don’t really understand the reasoning why,” Stuart Broad said.

Steve Smith was a standout performer for Australia in the fifth and final test as he helped the Australian team to get a decent total of 295 runs in the 1st innings and they will look to put in a fine performance with the ball on the Day 3 to give their side a real chance to win the Ashes after 21 long years.

Speaking to the media, Steve Smith admitted that it looked like out at first sight but on the other angle, it looked that the English wicket-keeper had lodged the stumps before collecting the balls and said that it would be out if he had collected the ball properly before knocking the bails.

“I saw the initial replay and saw the bail come up, and when I looked at it the second time looked like Jonny might have knocked the bail before the ball had come. Looked pretty close at that stage, if the ball had hit at the initial stage when the bail came then think I was well out of my ground,” Steve Smith said.

The former Australian skipper showed a lot of determination to apply himself on the tough wickets at the Oval before throwing away his wicket in the 1st innings. He scored 71 runs off 123 deliveries with the help of 6 boundaries in his innings and would look to add on some more runs in the 2nd innings to help his side win the final test on England soil.
