AEW and WWE news to watch the week of September 5
[ad_1]
There was a lot of action throughout Labor Day weekend. Between WWE Clash at the Castle on Saturday, through AEW All Out on Sunday, some of the best in-ring action of the year went down on two nights. Now, that the dust has settled, there’s a lot to talk about throughout the industry. These are the three biggest news stories to watch heading into this week.
AEW’s Backstage Situation
Some of the most important action within All Elite Wrestling went down after their banner PPV. Words were said at the media scrum that could have long-term implications. First, CM Punk was clear about his being upset with the “Hangman” Adam Page situation, which led to further comments that reportedly led to anger within the other members of The Elite, Kenny Omega, and The Young Bucks. According to Fightful Select, the three individuals even threatened to walk out of the promotion.
Three years into the promotion and it’s clear that the AEW honeymoon phase is over. Tony Khan has major work on his hands to deal with a locker room that seems to have multiple challenges in front of them. This isn’t new across industries like professional wrestling or sports at all, where superstar personalities can cause conflict. The question to watch is whether cooler heads will prevail to keep together a group that can have a monumental impact on wrestling.
The fallout from MJF’s return
Maxwell Jacob Freidman returned to AEW during the Casino Ladder Match. Along with Stokely Hathaway’s group, they ran into the match and caused all the disruption needed for The Joker to walk away with the chip. Hours later, it was revealed that he was the man behind the mask, putting him in a position to demand a title shot at the AEW World Championship that CM Punk holds. All this occurred just hours before the backstage fallout that will undoubtedly have implications for what goes on in the ring.
This Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite is going to be a huge show due to all these issues coming ahead. MJF is certainly going to cut a scathing promo about his time away and everything that is going on backstage. Will Khan respond to Punk’s harsh words for The Elite by causing him to drop the belt to MJF sooner, rather than later? All these points will come out this week.
NXT Callups On the Way
NXT Worlds Collide allowed for the NXT UK brand to be folded into the NXT 2.0 brand. Even though fans rolled their eyes at all the NXT UK representatives losing, these defeats create the path for more callups to the main roster. The main roster could use individuals like Tyler Bate, or a new team like Gallus to shake things up. Mieko Satomura would be a massive addition to the women’s division, but she’s currently based in the United Kingdom. Plus, perhaps Legado del Fantasma makes their debut in the coming days and eventually Toxic Attraction. Bringing up some fresh faces to the main roster would help shift around the weight of what is being carried today and truly help keep up the momentum WWE is enjoying.
