Sri Lanka’s Prabath Jayasuriya Breaks 71-Year-Old Test Record, Becomes Quickest Spinner To Take 50 Test Wickets

Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya created history by becoming the fastest spinner to reach 50 Test wickets. The record was previously held by former West Indies spinner Alf Valentine, who achieved the feat in his eighth Test match appearance, way back in December 1951.
Jayasuriya managed to break this feat on a batting paradise of a wicket at the Galle International Stadium on April 27, which further adds to his achievements.

Since his Test debut against Australia in July 2022, when he recorded the fourth-best debut match statistics of 12/177, the 31-year-old Jayasuriya has experienced an extraordinary climb.

Prabath Jayasuriya has six times taken five wickets in an inning, including 5/174 in Ireland’s first innings of the second Test at Galle. He only needs a five-wicket haul in the second innings to reach 10 wickets in a game for the third time.

In the first innings, Prabath Jayasuriya took his fifth five-wicket haul in Tests. He worked hard in the heat, taking five wickets in 58.3 overs while giving 174 runs. He picked up the tail after getting important wickets, preventing Ireland’s total from exceeding 500 runs.

Prabath Jayasuriya was also the second fastest overall to achieve the 50-wicket mark:

Prabath Jayasuriya has now broken the record while also becoming the joint-second fastest player in history to reach 50 wickets, after only Vernon Philander of South Africa and Tom Richardson of England.

Both pacers took 50 wickets in seven Tests, with Philander doing it in 2012 and Richardson in 1896.

Australia in a hurry Charlie Turner holds the overall record for taking 50 wickets in his first six Tests, which he has held since 1888.
