Michael Vaughan and Mark Waugh, two former rivals on the field got into a banter on social media after Vaughan claimed that England was the best Test team right now to watch after the first Test between England and New Zealand began at Bay Oval on February 16, 2023.

Vaughan was ecstatic after England’s brilliant performance in the first innings of the day-night pink ball Test against New Zealand being played at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. The remainder of the batters continued the same scoring rate as Ollie Pope made 42, Harry Brook slammed 89 with 15 fours and 1 six and Ben Foakes made 38 runs with captain Ben Stokes surprising everyone by declaring the first innings at 325/9 after playing just 58.2 overs in the first day. England scored at the run rate of 5.57.

For New Zealand, Neil Wagner picked 4/82, while Tim Southee and Scott Kuggeleijn picked two wickets each.

In reply, New Zealand were reduced to 37/3 at the end of the day’s play with James Anderson picking two wickets including that of former captain Kane Williamson for 6 runs, while Ollie Robinson took the scalp of Tom Latham for one.

However, his former rival, Australia’s Mark Waugh came back with a savage reply and put England at no.3 in the world, behind Australia and India in terms of Test cricket.

He tweeted: “Definitely in the top 3 Vaughney behind Aust and India..”

India and Australia will clash in the second Test of the four-match series in Delhi from February 17.
