Thought the T20 World Cup begins in the Super 12s stage? Think again. What a start it has been to the tournament, with the Associate nations shining brightly on the opening two days.

Namibia kicked things off with a superb, magnificent and historic victory over Asia Cup champions Sri Lanka. Not only did they beat the Lions, but they demolished them, sparking scenes of celebrations and tears in equal measure. The all-rounders – clearly Namibia’s main strength – were outstanding, and the Frylinck-Smit-Wiese trio will be out to inflict more damage.

However, the key question for the Namibians is whether they can back up such an emotionally charged victory with a focused performance two days later. They certainly have the depth and balance to do so, but Netherlands are battle-hardened after a very hard-fought victory over UAE. The Dutch bowling attack looked in rhythm, but the batting requires greater application, particularly against the disciplined Namibian attack that includes the impressive Ben Shikongo who often attacks the stumps much like the UAE bowlers did.

The winner will take a massive step towards qualification towards the Super 12s. The stakes are high, and this promises to be a fascinating contest.

Namibia:

• Jan Frylinck produced an all-round performance for the ages against Sri Lanka. He won player of the match with his 44 (28) and 2/26. He took 2/36 against Netherlands in last year’s World Cup, where he dismissed Colin Ackermann.
• David Wiese belted 66* off 40 balls against the Dutch in the 2021 World Cup. Also, expect Wiese to play a key role with the ball on the Geelong pitch that favours good length bowling with changes of pace. The all-rounder took 2/16 in four overs vs Sri Lanka.
• JJ Smit (31 off 16 and 1/16) had a dream outing against Sri Lanka. The left-armer has taken nine wickets in four T20Is in 2022 at an economy of 5.66 and average of 9.33.
• Ben Shikongo broke the back of the Sri Lankan batting early. The impressive seamer was on a hat-trick at one point, and eventually finished with 2/22.
• Bernard Scholtz is Namibia’s leading wicket taker in T20Is in 2022 with ten (avg. 18.10, econ. 5.65). He stifled Sri Lanka on the Geelong surface and finished with 2/18.

Netherlands:

• Max O’Dowd has scored the most runs in NED-NAM T20Is (110) at an average of 55.00 and strike rate of 107.84.
• Bas de Leede continues to impress. The all-rounder is Netherlands’ leading player with both bat (303 runs) and ball (13 wickets) in T20Is this year. He won player of the match against UAE with his 3/19.
• Skipper Scott Edwards is Mr. Reliable for Netherlands in 2022. He led his side home with a composed 16* against UAE, and he has the white-ball form this year to make a bigger score in this match.
• Logan van Beek has taken 13 wickets in just seven innings this year at an average of 13.30 and economy of 7.10. He did, however, go wicketless in two expensive overs vs UAE (0/19).
• Fred Klaasen bowled beautifully on the Geelong pitch vs UAE to finish with 2/13 off four overs. One wicket came in the middle overs and another in the final over, so he is capable of taking late wickets as well as scalps upfront.

Expect the captain who wins the toss to choose to bat first. Three of the four games in this World Cup have been won by the team batting first, including Namibia, whose 163 was way too many for Sri Lanka. A similar score by either side in these conditions can easily be a winning one, with the key formula of bowling into the wicket.

Netherlands are the only team to win chasing, but they made hard work of reaching 112 against UAE on a tricky pitch. A mostly sunny afternoon is forecast for Geelong, with 0% of rain according bom.gov.au.
