Former South African batter AB de Villiers hailed star Indian middle order batter Shreyas Iyer for his brilliant batting and expressed his love for watching him play. The former South African captain also compared the batting style of  Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill ahead of the ICC World Cup 2023.

Shreyas Iyer has been an important player for the Indian cricket team in the 50-over format of the game. As a right-handed batter, he secured his spot at No. 4 before he got sidelined due to a back injury. He made his comeback during the Asia Cup but suffered back spasms after playing two matches. However, he made a strong comeback against Australia by scoring a brilliant hundred during the second ODI.

The former South African captain AB de Villiers expressed his admiration for Iyer’s batting skills and feels that he is always composed and calm while batting, just like Shubman Gill.

“I love watching Shreyas Iyer bat. I love what he does in the middle, always composed, very calm, and reminds me of Shubman Gill,” Ab de Villiers said.

Iyer worked hard in recovering from surgery at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, where he later took part in match simulations and practice games to show his worth at the highest level. In the 47 games so far, he amassed 1801 runs at an average of 46.18 providing stability in the Indian middle order. He has struck three centuries and 14 half-centuries in 42 innings.

The Mumbai-born cricketer would face a stiff challenge from KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan for a spot in the playing 11 going into the mega event in India as two of the three players are expected to walk in the opening game against Australia in Chennai.

AB de Villiers has made his prediction for the leading run-scorer in the upcoming cricket tournament. He believes that the young Indian batsman, Shubman Gill, will perform exceptionally well in the mega event. The 360-degree batter added that Gill has the skills to put pressure on high-quality bowlers.

“He is still young, which is incredible because he looks like an experienced campaigner already. We are going to hear a lot about him in the future and this World Cup as I think he is going to be the top run scorer,” Ab de Villiers added.

Shubman Gill is expected to open the innings alongside the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma in the ODI World Cup. The youngster, who is known for his consistency across the format would look to continue his fine form going into the mega event.
