A pair of wrestlers — Wisconsin’s Haakon Peterson and Kentucky’s Jaydin Raney — became Fargo double winners as 16U wrestlers — and Rhode Island’s Gabriel Bouyssou made history by becoming the first wrestler from his state to win a 16U Greco-Roman national championship Thursday afternoon in Fargo, N.D.

Only one more day remains in the week-long U.S. Marines Junior/16U Nationals with the Junior Greco-Roman tournament to end Friday afternoon in the Fargodome. This comes after men’s and women’s freestyle tourneys on the Junior and 16U level took place between Sunday and Wednesday.

WIN Magazine is in Fargo to cover this year’s event, which began in 1971, and will provide comprehensive coverage in the next issue of WIN that will be printed on Aug. 2. Click here or call 888-305-0606 to subscribe to WIN.

Peterson, who also won a 16U Greco-Roman national championship in 2021, blanked Cole Welte of Nebraska, 4-0, to win the 94-pound title in Greco. This came three days after the 15-year-old native of Hollandale, Wisc., won a freestyle championship at 94.

Raney scored a last-second takedown to beat Declan Koch of Wisconsin, 3-1, to win the 113-pound pound Greco title. This came after the native of Mayfield, Ky., won the 106-pound 16U freestyle title on Monday. Raney also got a chance to celebrate with his twin brother Jordyn Raney, who won the 120-pound Greco-Roman championship. This is the first year that Kentucky crowned two champs in any style/age group.

Two other young men — Wisconsin’s Caleb Noble and Minnesota’s Bryce Burkett — who each lost a freestyle final earlier this week at this year’s Junior/16U Nationals in Fargo, avenged those setbacks with Greco-Roman titles.

Noble, a freshman from Pleasant Prairie, Wisc., overcame a five-point throw by Tanner Tran of Tennessee to win the 88-pound championship, 9-7.  This came after he lost 7-6 in the freestyle final on Monday against Mac Crosson of Iowa.

Burkett, a sophomore from Watertown, Minn., meanwhile avenged a freestyle championship loss to Jarrell Miller of Ohio, with a 3-0 victory over Miller in Greco-Roman.

Bouyssou, a native of Hope, R.I. and junior from Scituate High School, became just the second Rhode Island wrestler to win a championship at this annual event — joining Patrick Feeley, who won a 98-pound Junior freestyle title in 2002 — when he used a big throw to beat Minnesota’s Alex Braun, 12-5, in the 138-pound title bout.

California won its sixth all-time 16U Greco-Roman championship, and first since 2001, when the state featured three champs — Aliaksandr Kikiniou (145), Coby Merrill (182) and Nicholas Sahakian (220) — among its 14 All-Americans.

Wisconsin finished second in the team standings and also had three individual champs with Tristan Steldt (160) joining Noble and Peterson. Colorado and Missouri joined Kentucky with two champs. Thomas Verrette (126) and Billy Greenwood (132) won back-to-back titles for Colorado, while Missouri’s champs were Brennan Carey (195) and Sampson Stillwell (285).
